About Edinburgh

Edinburgh is a magical place – from the cobbled streets of the Old Town to the incredible Edinburgh Castle that sits high above the Royal Mile, it’s a city steeped in history, culture and wonderful architecture.

It’s now been recognised as a World Heritage site; it has over 4,500 listed buildings. Medieval buildings juxtapose with neoclassical architecture and this contrast gives the city its incredibly unique character.

There are some beautiful churches in Edinburgh, including the three-spired St Mary’s Cathedral and Rosslyn Chapel, richly decorated with pinnacles, gargoyles and foliage carvings.

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival is one of the most visited festivals, but Edinburgh also hosts the Scottish International Storytelling Festival, the International Film Festival and even the Festival of Politics with lively debates and talks!

The Royal Mile is exactly one Scots mile long and the destination for the best Scottish shopping in Edinburgh! You can buy kilts, classic cashmere, souvenirs – even bagpipes! The cobbled streets of Grassmarket are full of independent stores selling fashions and antiques by Scottish designers.

The Museum of Childhood is the world’s first museum dedicated to the history of childhood. It’s a fascinating look at toys, games and teddy bears through the years. Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson are three great Scottish writers celebrated at The Writers’ Museum.

Take a tour across the city – by foot, by bus, or even on a chauffeur driven trike! However you choose to explore this beautiful place, make sure you pop into Browns for a wee dram of Edinburgh whisky!
