Reading was founded by the Saxons in around 800AD and with over 1,400 years of history, there are plenty of places to visit.
At The Museum of Reading, you can find out more about the history of the town and see the world’s only copy of the Bayeux Tapestry. The museum is part of a Gothic complex of three linked buildings, that includes the Town Hall and the Concert Hall.
St Laurence’s Church is a beautiful ancient church on Town Hall Square with tombstones that date back to the 1700s. And the ruins of Reading Abbey are fascinating as is Reading Gaol, arguably the town’s most famous building, thanks to Oscar Wilde’s famous Ballad.
A more modern pastime has to be shopping - and Reading is one of the UK’s top retail destinations. From quirky little sweet shops and independent stores to the biggest high street names, Reading has everything you could want – as well as masses of convenient parking and a great public transport network.
The town has a busy events calendar – from the well established Reading Festival to the CAMRA Real Ale Festival and Reading Pride.
With two casinos, two multi-screen cinemas, jazz clubs, a film theatre, open air Shakespeare productions, concerts every Sunday and great gigs at Rivermead Leisure Complex on the banks of the River Thames, you’ll be spoilt for choice if you’re looking for an exceptional evening out.
